West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Congratulates Tarique Rahman and BNP Following Bangladesh Election Lead

KOLKATA / DHAKA – Mamata Banerjee, the Chief Minister of India’s West Bengal state, has officially extended her congratulations to the people of Bangladesh and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) following the early unofficial results of the national election.

In a statement shared on the social media platform X, Banerjee expressed her warmth toward the developing political landscape in the neighboring country, where unofficial counts show the BNP maintaining a significant lead.

“For this great victory, my congratulations to my Tarique-Bhai, his party, and all the parties,” Banerjee wrote, referring to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman.

The Chief Minister further emphasized the importance of regional stability and friendship, adding: “Pray, you all be well and happy. Wish that our relations with Bangladesh be always cordial.”

A Shared History: The Two Bengals

The relationship between West Bengal and Bangladesh is deeply rooted in a shared history that spans over a century. The region of Bengal was first divided by British colonial rulers in 1905, only to be reunited in 1911 following widespread protests.

However, in 1947, during the independence of the subcontinent, Bengal was partitioned for the second time along religious lines. This led to the creation of Hindu-majority West Bengal (now a state in India) and Muslim-majority East Bengal (which became East Pakistan and later, in 1971, the sovereign nation of Bangladesh).

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Banerjee’s message is seen by political analysts as a gesture to maintain diplomatic continuity and strengthen the social and economic bonds between the two Bengals. As the final official results from the Bangladesh Election Commission are awaited, the Chief Minister’s early outreach signals a desire for a peaceful and collaborative future between the two regions.
